Found in the bunker by British Allied soldiers, the card was an unsent Christmas letter by Adolf Hitler. On the card is Hitler's signature from the last few years of his life. "The card bears Hitler's name in gold, beneath an eagle and swastika, and is dated [December year]" ("Adolf Hitler Christmas Card" 1). In German, the card reads:
"Herzliche Glückwünsche zum Weihnachtsfest und zum Jahreswechsel."
-Adolf Hitler
Translated, it reads:
"Heartly wishes for your Christmas celebration and the coming of the new year."
-Adolf Hitler
An American troop discovered an unsigned version of the card from 1938 inside the Reichskanzlei and preserved many volumes of that item. "[The] consignor's father was the chief of staff, American Headquarters, Berlin Air Command from June to August, 1945. During this period, he had the opportunity to 'liberate' several volumes and other items from the [Reickskanzlei], specifically Hitler's offices and those adjoining. This example is one of those items" (1).
